Note: Can the title be changed to Duane Barry, cheers!

A true landmark in the show's history, Duane Barry is the episode that blew the doors off of the show's narrative after so much had been bubbling away under the surface in the lead-up to its airing.

It sees Mulder and Scully cross paths with the titular character, a man who claims to have been abducted by aliens and seemingly has evidence to support his claims, yet despite this, he has been confined to a mental hospital for the best part of a decade. Although under the belief that the aliens are coming back for him, Duane manages to escape his confines and takes some hostages in a nearby travel agency.

What unfolds is some of the most suspenseful drama that the show has ever conjured up, with the hostage negotiation scenes, as well as Duane's flashbacks to his abduction being real highlights. Although nothing quite compares to its shocking ending in which Duane abducts Scully, setting in motion one of the show's most iconic plotlines.

Its follow-up episodes, Ascension and One Breath are both top-tier crackers in their own right, but in terms of sheer quality and overall intrigue, this episode completely dominates in all areas.
