The X-Files: 10 Overlooked Episodes That Are Secretly Classics

6. E.B.E. - Season 1, Episode 17

Grotesque X-Files
Fox

'E.B.E.' is one of those episodes that's deeply beloved by fans, but is typically overshadowed by the more impressive arc-centric episodes that came after it.

After a UFO is shot down by the Iraqi military, Mulder and Scully are tipped off that the remains of a ship are being transported across America and quickly spring into action. Almost immediately after taking on the case, both agents find themselves under heavy surveillance from unseen forces, and Mulder's confidant Deep Throat throws them off the trail by giving them a fake photo of a UFO. Although despite the inherent danger they're faced with, both agents agree to continue their pursuit of the case and the events of their investigation would help to shape many future plot-lines in subsequent seasons.

It may not be anywhere near as action-packed as later mytharc episodes, but 'E.B.E.' helped set the standard for what the show was capable of when it doubled down on its core story. Giving Mulder further reason to be unyielding in his pursuit for the truth, and Scully a deeper understanding of the shadowy forces that were at play.

It may get overlooked in the grand scheme, but its importance to the story cannot be understated.
