The X-Files: 15 Creepiest Creatures

10. Agula Mala's Sea Monsters

Appeared in: Season 6, Episode 13 - "Agula Mala" Every good paranormal show should have a "creature from the deep" sort of episode. It's not just that The Creature from the Black Lagoon is a classic movie monster, or that there was a boom in deep-water themed horror and sci-fi flicks in the late 80s with films like The Abyss, Leviathan, and Deep Star Six (all of which came out in 1989). It's more because, frankly, the oceans are the one great territory on our planet that are still unexplored to the level that the rest of the planet has been (something that clearly led to that late 80s/early 90s boom in deep water themed scary tales). The very depths of the oceans of our planet remain nearly untouched, and we're still finding new, exotic species coming out of them, which in turn sparks our imaginations - the oceans are so close, yet so foreign, all at once, and it's easy to believe that some sort of alien, monstrous species might still be lurking down there. Now keep in mind that not all monsters need to be huge (we've covered this). The creatures in Agula Mala - which literally means "bad water" - vary in size, but they are not Cthulhu-sized behemoths at any rate. And they are, apparently, made of pure water, or just about, so much so that they blend right in - at least in sea water. They eat away at victims slowly, liquefying them in fact. Just about the only thing that hurts the serpentine beasts happens to be fresh water. It's lucky for Mulder and Scully that it happened to be raining throughout a large part of the episode.
