Titans Season 1: 3 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Hawk And Dove'

2. Robin's Inner Darkness Felt Forced

If you saw the series' premiere, then you know that Dick Grayson left Gotham City because he feared that he was becoming too much like his surrogate father, and former partner, Batman. Throughout the episode, we got the sense that he was running from something yet completely unaware that he had already become far worse than The Dark Knight, violently beating criminals to a bloody pulp when they attempted to outnumber him.

However, this week, he was completely aware of what he had become. When he showed up as Robin to rescue Hawk and Dove, there was no beating around the bush this time, no wrestling with internal demons - just violence, and a lot of it.

Within seconds, he jammed a blade into a man's private parts, threw his own 'R' symbol into someone's eye socket and, oh yeah, chokeslammed someone. While the intricate decimation was very Batman-like, the bloodthirsty approach felt rather forced.

We know the darkness resides within him, but nothing triggered this specific outburst. Couldn't he have just systematically eliminated the threats without being so murderous about it? It almost felt like the writers were just hammering us over the head with the fact that he's struggling with his demons, but the only problem here is that he wasn't struggling - he was in control the whole time and, for some reason, started with extreme measures. It felt completely unnatural.
