Titans Season 1: 4 Ups & 0 Downs From ‘Doom Patrol’

Ups...

4. Dick's Development

So far, the portrayal of Dick Grayson on Titans has been a rather divisive matter. On one hand, he's incredibly compelling and Brenton Thwaites does a great job getting that across. However, on the other, he has often resorted to unnecessary brutality without a second thought (when he was more than capable of disarming the threats). While his internal struggles had been explained, the physicality of his attacks felt forced.

While all of the main character's struggles played more of a background role to the Doom Patrol this week, that didn't stop the writers from tackling one of the season's overarching stories in a rather subdued way.

Dick once again resorted to his violent approach when a loud-mouth hunter refused to talk about Raven's whereabouts - but this time, it actually felt like he had been pushed too far and, as a result, lashed out. Moreover, the realisation that the man's child was watching him beat her father into a bloody mess forced him to, temporarily at least, deal with his demons. That, and Starfire's words of wisdom in the car, made him see things somewhat more clearly and this ultimately allowed him to mend his broken relationship with Raven.

Slowly but surely, the Dick Grayson we know and love is on his way back to us.
