True Blood: 20 Defining Moments

12. Sookie's Lightning Trick, Season 2, Episode 10 Talk about coming out of left field. While we knew Sookie wasn't completely human due to her telepathic abilities, none of us expected for her to randomly shoot light out of her fingers. After being threatened by Maryann (Michelle Forbes), Sookie pushed her away and inadvertently light blasted her in the head. This seemed to have little effect on Maryann, but she did bring up the question that so many other characters would ask in the future: "What are you?" The first time we saw Sookie's "lightning trick" (as Nan Flanagan dubbed it) we knew she was definitely more than just a mind-reading waitress. This moment confirmed to many viewers that she was another type of supernatural creature. Sookie later gained more control of her light and was able to use it blast away foes, especially vampires.

11. Maryann Meets Her God, Season 2, Episode 12

true-blood-season-2-pics11 Much of season 2 focused on Maryann and her takeover of Bon Temps. Slowly, we found out that she was more than just a social worker who liked to throw extravagant parties. She was eventually revealed to be an immortal maenad, who came to Bon Temps in hopes of uniting with her god Dionysus. To do this, Maryann infected every human in town with her "energy", turning them into sex-crazed minions with black pupils. Her ultimate goal was to sacrifice Sam Merlotte, an act that she thought would summon her god (who according to Queen Sophie-Anne would never show up). As killing Maryann seemed to become increasingly impossible, Sam and Bill came up with a crazy yet smart plan to kill her. After Sam offered himself up to Maryann, Bill quickly gave him his blood so he could heal and shift into a bull resembling the maenad's god. An enthralled Maryann let her guard down long enough for Sam to shift back and rip out her heart, which got the job done. This gruesomely spectacular moment marked the end of one of the show's most entertaining story arcs.
