True Detective: 5 Crazy Theories On How It Will End
5. Rust Will Die
Early on in the show, it seemed Rust was a prime suspect. He's shady and has a mysterious past, he's obviously not at peace, and the washed-up modern-day character lied to the detectives interviewing him. But even though you can't rule out the possibility Rust did kill Dora Lange, it's looking less and less likely. He's passionate about the case, and meticulously studies every detail. Indeed, it seems to be the only thing keeping him alive. Last week, Rust told Marty, "My lifes been a circle of violence and degradation as long as I can remember. Im ready to tie it off." That sounds like the words of a tired, tired detective to me. Here is a boozed up man who's gone from solving crime to serving drinks. He's lost his daughter, has no real family to speak of, and gains no enjoyment from life. Rust is this case. What happens when it's over? If he doesn't die trying to stop the murderer(s), will he commit suicide in the days that follow? We also now know that Matthew McConaughey won't be coming back for series two, and maybe there's more narrative behind that decision than simple actor unwillingness. All in all, Rust's future doesn't look too bright...
