It's hard not to keep going back to the show's name and wondering why it's called True Detective, especially since we've followed two detectives this far into the murk, not one. Does it hint that one of them is the killer? And if it does, perhaps it's the slower of the two, the one you'd least expect, the family man whose life is unravelling before our eyes. Perhaps Marty is the Yellow King. It sounds strange at first, but there are a couple of scenes that are jarring in normal circumstances and lend weight to the theory. First of all, why did he shoot Reggie LeDoux in the head right out of the blue? Seeing the child victims may have disturbed him, but enough to murder someone at point-blank range? There could be more to it: with LeDoux caught, Marty might have known he'd talk and reveal his own role in the case. Remember, Rust found a number of important clues inside the Tuttle-funded school he visited again on his own after Marty initially lured him away from it with a new lead. And why did Marty get so annoyed about Rust mowing his lawn? Because you don't mow another man's lawn... or because he was worried he might find something? Marty doesn't wear the scars we've come to associate with our serial killer. But he might not have to. We know masks are involved. We've seen and heard it time and time again. In The Locked Room, the preacher even warned us: "The face you wear is not your own." It wouldn't surprise me if this crazy theory is, in the end, the most likely of all, and that Rust has known all along. Which of these theories do you think carries the most weight?
