True Detective: 5 Crazy Theories On How It Will End

2. Rust Planted The Body

While it's unlikely now that Rust is the killer, that doesn't rule out the possibility it was he who planted the body in the first episode. Think about it: everything about the murderous cult is shrouded in secrecy; all the other missing girls Rust links to the case are like fairy dust on the wind. No one else connects them because there's nothing obvious to tie them together. Someone lit a fire to draw attention to the body in episode one: they wanted it to be found. Rust is never less than 10 steps ahead of Marty or anyone else working on the case: he's often displayed frustration at how slowly they join the dots. And €“ crucially €“ he appears to have been working on the mystery before it even started. That's right: the Dora Lange case started three months after Rust got the job. But we see a scene two weeks after he got the job, in which Marty visits his house and sees a number of weird books on a table. The most recently read one is boldly titled Sex Crimes. Additionally, Rust tells the detectives that his daughter was hit by a drunk driver, but what if she was murdered by the cult? It would explain his unwavering determination in the case, the one thing that keeps him going.
