True Detective Season 2: 10 Big Questions From Episode 1
7. What Does Ani's WebCam Sister Have To Do With The Case?
Rachel McAdams' hard-boiled Antigone "Ani" Bezzerides certainly doesn't lag beyond the boys in terms of old fashioned toughness. At various points, she scares a terrified lover out of her bedroom with an unspoken (but presumably startling) sex act, drunkenly flips off a pair of hulking bouncers who eject her from a bar, and remains an emotionally closed door to colleagues and family members alike. Like her classical namesake, she is defiant and unwaveringly strong-willed. Unlike Sophocles' version, she is an unflinching wielder of authority, rather than an oppressed rebel figure. Throughout the episode, questions are raised over the suitability of such a dogmatic character in the morally ambiguous world of True Detective, particularly in the memorable "brothel" scene. Ani and her task force bust into a seedy apartment, looking to bring down a suspected whorehouse and arrest all the occupants. Instead, they find nothing more than a completely legal webcam-pornography HQ - one of the girls revealing herself to be Ani's sister. Questions Raised: Is Ani's sister important to the plot or merely a point of contrast? Is Ani best suited for the Caspar case?
