True Detective Season 2: 10 Big Questions From Episode 1
6. Why Is Paul Woodrugh So Weird?
The most underwhelming lead performance has inarguably been delivered by Taylor Kitsch, whose war veteran-turned-motorcycle cop is as ludicrously grizzled and macho as he sounds. Questions of acting ability aside, Paul Woodrugh is a character with several mysterious attributes. Towards the start of the episode he pulls over an attractive young actress for driving recklessly, only for her to offer him sexual favours in exchange for a free pass. It's left deliberately ambiguous whether he agrees - but this mystery pales in comparison to two other strange quirks. Woodrugh struggles to sleep with a girlfriend, first retreating to the bathroom and necking a suspicious blue pill, before scrunching his face in pained anticipation of a presumably pleasurable act. Immediate fan theories challenge his sexuality - hardly the most dramatic of twists - but a more solid clue may lie in the many scars criss-crossing his chiselled frame. Some are presumably from his army days, but the origin of one in particular is kept secret. Questions Raised: Did Paul accept sexual favours from the actress he pulled over? Why does he struggle to sleep with his girlfriend? How did he get his scars, and are they related to his bedroom difficulties?
