True Detective Season 2: 10 Reasons To Be Excited

3. Change Is A Good Thing

The first season of the show was something of a modern masterpiece, with feats of writing, acting and directing to rival anything seen on the other critically-acclaimed dramas of the past few years. Many see that as a stick with which to beat season 2, but that shouldn't be the case. Just because it's changing from that first season should be cause for optimism, rather than concern. It means that it can set itself apart and be its own thing, rather than having to stick with the tricks it used in season 1. Anthology series are nothing new, and have long been successful - as most recently evidenced by American Horror Story. There's new directors, a new cast, and a new story to be told, and that means we'll be getting something that retains the 'soul' of True Detective while also being a fresh and unpredictable bit of television in its own right.
