1. The Documentary Maker Is Julie’s Daughter
There is a definite trend in modern television to go meta or to have alternate timelines. BoJack Horseman’s most recent season leaned heavily into meta territory, while Westworld has been hugely popular with its often confusing stance on chronology. The likes of American Horror Story have dabbled in both across their various seasons too, perhaps most notably in Asylum.
True Detective is running an 80s narrative, a 90s narrative and a relatively modern day narrative all at once. However, this is not a show that does things ‘just because’. It feels more like a return to the form of the first season, but why Hays is involved in this documentary at all is still raising questions. And with questions inevitably come theories.
He’s clearly unenthusiastic about it, suggesting either the filmmaker or the son was very insistent that it go ahead. The son seems like he loves him, so unless there’s money issues, he’s probably not manipulating him.
That still leaves the documentary maker though. She seems very knowledgeable about the case already; is she closer to it than she’s letting on? One theory posits that she’s Julie’s daughter, desperately seeking out the truth anyway she can.
