10. Unanswered: Who Made The Peephole?
The Peephole was a bit of a Red herring (as pointed out here, there’s actually plenty of them) and made viewers think that the crime would be much more disturbing than it turned out. Kidnapping and drugging is undoubtedly a serious and unsettling crime, a peephole in a young child’s room is another level of disgusting that True Detective has not been known to shy away from.
Much like it must be in real-life kidnapping/homicide cases, so often one thinks a clue is of dire importance and it turns out just to be a distraction from the truth. That said, whoever made the peephole did it deliberately and there was an unnerving crime that was never resolved, nor addressed.
