5. What Happens To Harlan?
During her time in Dallas, Vanya works as a nanny on a farm where she forms a touching relationship with Sissy (Marin Ireland) and her mute and autistic son Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly), who she helps look after.
After a dramatic sequence in which Vanya uses her powers to save Harlan from drowning, it’s later revealed that Vanya passed part of her powers to him to save his life. The connection between the pair only got stronger when Vanya is being tortured by the FBI as Harlan is shown experiencing her pain while exhibiting her powers. This sequence of events comes to a head when young Harlan, after inadvertently killing his father, becomes the bomb that could cause the apocalypse.
Escaping to California with his mother at the end of the season, it looked like Vanya succeeded in defusing the situation. But then we see Harlan levitating his toy bird, meaning that he still has at least a small part of Vanya’s power.
Now all we can think about is what happens next for Harlan in California? Will his powers continue to grow? And what could he get up to in the next 50 years? Only time will tell.
