Upcoming X-Men TV Shows: 8 Things You Need To Know
1. Don’t Expect A Wolverine Cameo
There's little point in hoping for small screen cameos from the big screen X-Men. As Shuler Donner told IGN, "The cinematic universe will not worry about Legion. They will not worry about these TV worlds as all. They will just continue in the way that they have been continuing".
Matt Nix told Collider that his show won't even do Agents-Of-SHIELD-esque allusions to the films, saying, "it’s certainly not like ‘since this happened in X-Men Apocalypse, now all of these things are happening,’ which I think is cool but [SHIELD] already did that."
Nix then elaborated a little, adding, "it’s sort of designed to side-step questions like ‘Where is Wolverine?’ So you sort of have to answer those questions, and I didn’t want to do anything like ‘Wolverine is just offscreen!’ [...] So it exists in a world where those questions are answered without needing to name a lot of names or spend time dwelling on that issue.”
And as for Legion's connection to Professor X, Shuler Donner said that they will "touch on it" but they "don't want to get into the Xavier world, because that's not what this show is about."
So, for the time being, the small screen will be stuffed with mutants, but not the ones from the movies. This doesn't necessarily have to be a negative thing: without having to be slavish to continuity, these series can pull of majorly surprising storylines. Noah Hawley and Matt Nix are talented writers, and here they could deliver some proper small screen X-cellence.
