Tom McInerney, the makeup designer for the set of Vikings does thorough research when he designs tattoos for the cast and makes sure he creates designs that could have had real meaning to the Vikings of that time - from Scaninavian and Norse artifacts to runic scribe.

The tattoos Rollo has can be traced to Fenrir The Wolf, a monster wolf in Norse Mythology who the Vikings believed controlled the elements, and the ones on his arms are of Skoll and Hati, Fenrir's sons, who they believed were two ravenous wolves that would chase the sun and moon - turning day into night. Fenrir was also the inspiration for J.K Rowling's Fenrir Greyback, the werewolf that also doubled as a Death Eater.

The raven tattoo Ragnar has on his head symbolizes Odin and you might have noticed that it was only added once he became the Earl. Tom McInerney has admitted in the past that he adds on to the raven whenever something major happens in Ragnar's life.
