Vikings: 10 Most Disturbing Moments
1. Athelstan Gets Crucified
Crucifixion is truly one of histories nastiest ways to go. The awful execution method has been a source of fear for generations, and Vikings certainly put it's two cents into that reputation. This scene was utterly painful to watch, not just because of the violence and gore, but because of the victim.
Athelstan was a real highlight of the series, as the conflicts between his old life and the one carved out for him after being taken as a slave was compelling, and downright emotional. Even if it was often tested, his innocence and faith made him seem like a bright spark in the dark and decaying world of Vikings. Therefore, watching as he was captured and placed onto a crucifix with nails through his hands felt akin to a downright horror movie.
His innocence and likeability made this scene even more disturbing, as Athelstan's cries of pain as he begged for mercy were horrible. Additionally, the religious iconography of seeing this former Christian monk splayed out on a crucifix was almost too much to bear.
Thankfully King Ecbert came along in time to save this beloved character from an unbelievably grizzly demise. Still, the damage was already done, as the fans were in complete shock and despair to see this decent person suffer such horrendous and brutal pain.
