In a show about Vikings, people are going to get tortured. It's as inevitable as death and taxes. However, while the act itself was intense, it was nothing compared to the aftermath that was seen for Prince Dir.

The specific scene in discussion comes when Ivar and Prince Igor go to look upon the brother of Oleg. Post-torture, Dir has been locked up in a kennel, with one end of a chain physically forced through his mouth. The horrifying sight is bad enough, but it's made worse as a clearly deranged Dir begins to seemingly bark at his onlookers, to which Ivar and Igor laugh, with the young Prince even mocks him by barking back.

While seeing someone suffer instruments of pain is a horrible sight, the visuals of this formerly proud character tied inside a cage and looking far more like a canine beast than a man outweighs his initial torture, as there's something genuinely devastating about the thought of someone treating their own relative like this.

Thankfully, with Ivar's help, he would find his way to freedom, but the image of this man crawling on his knees, with a hook in his cheek barking like a dog, would make even the proudest of viewers look away.
