Vikings: 10 Most Disturbing Moments

9. The Snake Pit

If you were to create a census of the world's biggest fears, it's safe to say that snakes would be on it. Plenty of people find the limbless creatures utterly terrifying, which made King Aelle's snake pit a loathsome hole of nightmare-fuel for a lot of viewers.

This instrument of death was used on several occasions - most notably as the execution method for Ragnar Lothbrok - but it's the pit's debut that stood out the most.

The reason that the first use of the pit outranks Ragnar's demise was thanks to the victims reactions. The former King of Kattegat took his death like an absolute champ, letting his executioners know that he felt no fear, and even bragging about his inevitable place in Valhalla. This made his demise feel far more badass than it was disturbing. However, the same cannot be said for the first victim, General Wigea.

As this man begs for his life and desperately seeks mercy from the King he has loyally served, he is ignored and tossed into the horrifying hole full of venomous despair. There he struggles as the creatures take bites out of him until he slowly - and undoubtedly painfully - loses consciousness amid screams and cries.

Anyone who watches this scene should be disturbed and appalled, whether they have a fear of snakes or not.
