VIkings: 10 Worst Things Ragnar Lothbrok Did

9. Floki's Harsh Punishment

Long time viewers of the show know that Floki hasn't exactly had the best of times during his escapades with Ragnar.

The often eccentric shipbuilder was a troubled soul that was often easily influenced by those around him. He had several emotional breakdowns over the course of the show, such as when he pushed his family away as he believed he would be no good as a father.

Despite the unbalance in his mind, Floki always tried to do what was best for his people, and follow what he believed to be the will of the gods. Ragnar was aware of Floki's devotion and regarded him as one of his oldest and closest friends.

In spite of their kinship, Ragnar quickly pushed Floki aside in favour of his new pet, Athelstan, a Christian monk they had captured during one of their raids. Over several years, tensions between Athelstan and Floki grew as the two competed over their religious beliefs.

Ragnar was extremely aware of this and often ignored Floki's threats and outbursts. Eventually, he murdered Athelstan just as he said he would.

Ragnar took this opportunity to punish him, mirroring the punishment given to the Norse god Loki after he caused the death of Baldur. Floki was tied up in a cave underneath a dripping stalactite which, over time, would cause great unrest and discomfort and often drove people mad.

His only reprieve was when his loving wife, Helga, held a bowl to capture the water droplets.
