Vikings: 12 Most Brutal Moments So Far
11. Ivar Abandons Baldur
This is brutal in very different ways, so let’s get straight to it. Season 5 part 2 Ivar sees the birth of Ivar's son Baldur; the details behind it are not important, but this baby is born with some birth defect that the audience never gets to see, and Ivar is clearly upset about this.
Knowing how hard it is to be a Viking with a birth defect, Ivar takes Baldur into the winter forest in the middle of the night. And after a very emotional scene where he talks to Baldur, he begins to crawl away leaving his child in the cold. As this happens you hear the innocent cries of the baby, which alone is already terrible, but it gets worse.
As some time passes fox hunters find the mangled body of an infant in a den of foxes. Ivar's wife believes this is Baldur and so does the audience. The worst part is she mentions that she has no idea of knowing if he was alive while the foxes ate him, which is the point any normal human being should feel sick.
It's proof that brutality doesn’t necessarily have to be bloody or even seen.
