7. Rollo Betrays Ragnar (The First Time)

Rollo is, of course, brother to Ragnar and the first we see of him the two are fighting side by side. Yet, little by little we begin to see the jealousy that Rollo has for his little brother. However, in a culture of honor, no one ever expected brother to betray brother, especially so early in the show.

At the end of season 1 Rollo is ordered to stay with an enemy Jarl during peace talks, but Jarl Borg does not want to have peace and sees an opportunity in Rollo’s jealousy to turn him against his brother telling him that he deserves to be greater than Ragnar. Borg shows Rollo a lavish time with good food, wine and women and convinces Rollo that if he helps him then he will be a powerful man, and all of this could be his.

Rollo somewhat inevitably agrees to help Jarl Borg, effectively betraying Ragnar and on episode 1 of season 2 we see brother and brother clash axes. Unfortunately, this isn’t the last time Rollo betrays Ragnar and yet every time it happens, it's shocking. Call it Loki Syndrome, perhaps?
