The Walking Dead: 10 Most Brutal Deaths To Date

1. Lori And Judith Grimes

Appears In: Comic Cause Of Death: Shot by Lilly The story arc in the comic dubbed "No One Is Safe" spans the most horrific moments in the series many of which have appeared already on this very list. As previously touched on, it starts with Tyreese's beheading and it finishes with the death of Rick's wife Lori and newborn child Judith. The entire arc sees the death of almost every primary character in the series up until that point, fully exemplifying its title, but none is more demoralizing than when Lori and Judith meet their end. In the frenzied assault on the prison the Grimes family attempt to flee the site and in a moment of panic Rick and Carl are briefly separated from their other half. Seeing the opportunity to attack, The Governor commands one of his Woodbury residents, Lilly, to shoot at Lori. She does and we see the bullet painfully tear through her abdomen, Lori's face writhing in pain and terror. She falls to the ground landing on poor, innocent baby Judith, crushing her to death. Rick looks back at his fallen women but is forced to leave them so he can save the remaining member of his bloodline - his son, Carl. It's another one of the many brutally unfair judgement calls Rick is forced to make, if not the hardest. Why It's So brutal It's a moment in the series that brings about a dawn of complete hopelessness and despair and although Rick just manages to make it out alive, he is never the same man. It's something that defines the character of Rick for the remainder of the series and changes him forever. We live through Rick's pain and witness him spiral into depression and delusional madness, eventually coming out the other side as the strong, hardened and impenetrable man we come to know. It's probably the most integral and darkest moment in the series (a baby dies, for crying out loud) that completely changes the comic's dynamic and for this it easily takes top spot. Hopefully, this article hasn't left you feeling too broken and beaten as we reopened some old wounds, but feel free to hit up the comments if you think there's any other deathly moments that deserve a mention here.
