The Walking Dead: 11 Best Introductory Episodes

4. "Killer Within" (Season 3, Episode 4)

"Beside The Dying Fire" may have been the most game-changing episode of the first two seasons, but "Killer Within" absolutely blows it out of the water. Despite the overall sense of safety that accompanied the taking and clearing of the prison, a choice of Rick's comes back with a vengeance, and he must pay a horrifying cost for his oversight. Taking place almost entirely at the prison, "Killer Within" is so tense and so mind-blowing that it is almost difficult to believe that Rick is not going to wake up at the end from a terrible nightmare. There are devastating losses, and even the slightest bit of hope that may emerge is completely overshadowed by the overall despair. By the end, we know that things will never be as they were for our merry little band of survivors, and we are brutally reminded that there is no room for complacency in the zombie apocalypse. And this wasn't even a season finale!
