The Walking Dead: 13 Things That Make No Damn Sense

12. Merle's Visible Fist

Walking Dead Merle Missing Hand

I think there's a reason they gave Hershel an artificial foot in the new series, and that reason is practicality. Not practicality for Hershel, mind €“ although I'm willing to bet it sure helps that he can walk without crutches €“ but practicality for the crew. Convincingly showing the absence of a foot is a feat (pun unintended) which requires both sleight of hand and computer jiggery-pokery, and is probably an unnecessary drain on resources. Why have I gone off on this story? I'm trying to demonstrate how difficult it is for any show to convincingly portray amputees. Even in the current series when showing Hershel's artificial foot, they still use sleight-of-hand witchcraft €“ when actor Scott Glenn kneels down to talk to Rick among the crops, what you don't see is half his real leg is buried in the dirt, and the fake, prosthetic-footed leg is attached to what's showing, giving the impression that he's kneeling. Yet with all these intricacies, it's only natural they'll occasionally mess up, and they do so with Merle. Now, Michael Rooker hiding the fact he's still got a hand is pretty easy €“ going heavy metal on it, they just whack a knife harness above the stump, meaning he can still have his hand present but unseen. But occasionally there's a slip of the props and you can see Merle's clearly-not-supposed-to-be-visible hand. The most obvious time this happens is during the events of season three's Walk With Me, when the older Dixon brother shows his stump to Michonne and Andrea. When we've got a close-up of it, it obviously looks real. However, when he goes to put his harness back on, you can clearly seem Rooker balling his supposed-to-be-non-existent fist. It's only a momentary mistake, but the eagle-eyed among you will be able to spot it. I couldn;t get a video of it, but it's the scene in the picture above. Seriously, go back and watch it.
