The Walking Dead: 6 Things That "Us" Did Right (And 3 It Didn't)
4. Abraham And Co.
Ever since their introduction back in "Inmates," a hefty percentage of viewers have been wary of Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita. It's not that they've ever been particularly threatening; rather, they've always felt so exaggerated that it's been difficult to take them seriously. The introduction itself certainly didn't help matters. Between Abraham's action figure attire, Eugene's mullet, and Rosita's ridiculously impractical outfit, the perfectly spaced pose that they struck was almost laughable. It may have been an homage to a cover of one of the comics, but the image was so incongruous on screen that many of us were taken right out of the episode. Their second appearance in "Claimed" wasn't much better. They weren't characters; they were caricatures. "Us" gave them a chance to actually develop. Rosita showed off a personality beyond than just a pair of legs and bare midriff. Abraham grew to care about something other than his mission to deliver Eugene to Washington. Eugene revealed himself to be more than a slightly sketchy figure who may be lying about his knowledge of how to save the world. (He is additionally a sexually frustrated nerd.) Refreshingly, Abraham and Co. also provided viewers with some humor. The Walking Dead has never exactly been a comedy, but there hasn't been much beyond than Daryl snarking about peach schnapps and Michonne guzzling Crazy Cheese to make us smile lately. There may have been as much eye-rolling as there was laughter at Team Washinton's antics, but at least there was a break from the constant doom and gloom of the Team That Was Formerly Known As Prison.
Fiction buff and writer. If it's on Netflix, it's probably in my queue. I've bought DVDs for the special features and usually claim that the book is better than the movie or show (and can provide examples). I've never met a TV show that I won't marathon. Follow on Twitter @lah9891 .
