The Walking Dead: 7 Things That "The Grove" Did Right (And 3 It Didn't)

6. Crispy Walkers

The Walking Dead has always boasted a wide variety of zombies. In the pilot episode, there was a little girl zombie in her pyjamas missing half of her face. The second season saw a bloated zombie trapped in the bottom of a well. The third season? Riot gear zombies. Even this season saw some delightfully eerie zombies with blood streaming out of their eyes. Now, the crispy Walkers of "The Grove" will definitely rank among the most awesome of them all. After seeing a fire burning in the distance for the first half of the episode, the group is set upon by a band of Walkers unlike any seen before. Smoke pours out of them as they stagger toward the grove, some only slightly scorched while others are burnt black. Charred skin flakes off of their smouldering bodies. They're twisted, disgusting, and overall nightmarish. Note to self: do not go with "flamethrower" as weapon of choice in the zombie apocalypse. On a less spine-tingling note, the crispy Walkers were a fantastic way to show the repercussions of Daryl's and Beth's moonshine bonfire back in "Still." The two were criticised then for the conflagration, and it was fun in "The Grove" to see an unexpected payoff. No, Daryl and Beth didn't get themselves killed by torching their shelter, and they did not start a forest fire that would consume the woods of Georgia, but they did manage to create an army of flaming zombies. Even better, the still-burning fire €“ coupled with the fact that none of the group had yet sought out extra layers of clothing €“ provides some timeline clarification. The individual stories of the second half of the season have never been concurrent, and we see for certain now that Carol and Tyreese are at least several days behind everybody else.
