The Walking Dead Season 5: 10 Things That Need To Happen
6. More Zombies
Right so, yes, the walkers aren't actually the main thrust of The Walking Dead. It's part of what differentiates the show from the glut of zombie fiction that's taking over pop culture at the moment, and plays into the strengths of the classics of the genre, like George A Romero's Dead trilogy - the real threat, the real drama, comes not from the hoards ghouls stalking the land and eating brains. It comes from the way people act when forced into such a desperate situation. On The Walking Dead, we get to see how people act in that situation for an extended period of time. The thing is, you do periodically need to remind the viewers that the reason society has crumbled is because the majority of humanity has been transformed into a bunch of shambling, flesh-eating reanimated corpses. It's understandable the show sometimes forgets. After all, from a story standpoint the writers probably don't want to fall into the trap of just dropping walkers into any, and from a budget point of view, they probably don't want to shell out for the expensive (and impressive) make-up which makes the zombies come alive - so to speak - on too regular a basis. Still, in season five it might be good to see a little more of the shambling undead, even if it's not necessarily in gory or action-packed ways. One of the ways those Romero films succeed in ratcheting up the tension of the boiler room-style environment the survivors find themselves in is by constantly cutting away to the ever-present threat that lies just beyond those walls, always threatening to get in and ruin stuff...
