Westworld: 9 Mysteries That Season 2 Must Resolve
2. The Fate Of William/The Man In Black
The biggest answer fans got in Westworld's first season involved the entwined fate of William, Delores' love, and the identity of the Man in Black (Ed Harris). Of course, we come to learn that they're one and the same. Delores' memories are fractured; unlike humans, she sees them with perfect clarity, meaning she's unable at times to differentiate past from present.
William, meanwhile, has gone from idealistic, to something darker. The park changes him, but not for the better. He turns out to be ruthless, and wants more than anything to solve the maze, which he believes is the park's ultimate endgame, designed by Arnold.
The maze, however, is not what he thinks it is. It's a way to wake up the hosts, not a game for guests to muddle through.
Ultimately, however, the hosts waking up - and being able to fight back - gives William what he wants: real stakes.
In the end, he's shot by Clementine as a band of hosts descend on the gathered board of Delos. Yet he takes a wound to the shoulder, and we never see him perish on screen. Being too major a character die off-screen, it's likely the Man in Black has survived - but how? And where does he go now? In addition to Maeve and Delores, that needs to be a major focus in season two.
