Westworld Premiere: 8 Ups And 2 Downs From 'The Original'

1. The Human-Only Scenes Aren't As Interesting

Seeing the robots interact within Westworld, either together or with the newcomers, is one of the many joys of Westworld. It's not a particularly character-driven episode, with a lot concerning around information and the wider questions around A.I., but it's still crafted some entertaining ones, and has fun with them being together.

Even away from the park, there are some great scenes in which the creators talk to and analyse the hosts, such as Bernard's chat with Dolores, and Dr Ford's talk with her father. Where things fall a little more flat is when the robots are removed from the conversation. The scenes don't have the same spark, the same drive and sense of bigger things going on.

It's covered up when it happens between Bernard and Ford, because Jeffrey Wright and Anthony Hopkins give such good performances, but really falls down with the conspiratorial duo of Theresa (the operations leader) and Lee (the narrative director). They feel a bit like stock characters, and in the grand scheme of things, it's hard to care too much about what they're up to or why.
