Westworld Season 2 Finale: What Does The Ending Really Mean?

1. William Is (And Isn't) A Host

Westworld saved one of its biggest twists for after the credits, with a stinger that picked up with William still in the park. Although at first it looks like this could be shortly after the destruction witnessed in the finale, the post-credits scene introduces us to the third timeline of Westworld, one that takes place far, far into the future.

It's long enough that Emily has been dead a good while, and that the experiment has been taking longer than they expected. Once again they're looking to find "fidelity", which reveals that the Man in Black is, like James Delos, a host/human hybrid. That's the case in the post-credits scene, anyway, but is not true of the character we've been watching over the past two seasons. That MIB has very much been a human, even if his actions haven't always seemed it.

After two narrative challenges, he's now facing his biggest test yet: trying to prove that he does have his own free will and can change his actions, but so far is stuck in the same loop that sees him killing his own daughter. It's a hell of a cliffhanger, and provides a platform for not just Season 3, but a longer-term goal for the show too.
