What CBS All Access Rebranding To Paramount+ Could Mean For Star Trek

Yesterday ViacomCBS made it official that their streaming service will be re-branded and relaunched as Paramount+ in 2021, which will be the home to upcoming original Star Trek TV series, including Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Bob Bakish, President and CEO of ViacomCBS, told Deadline, the service “will draw on the sheer breadth and depth of the ViacomCBS portfolio”. Paramount distributed all thirteen Star Trek movies, while CBS has been the brand associated with the TV shows.

The Star Trek movies and TV shows were split in 2005 when Viacom CEO Tom Freston and fellow CEO Les Mooves were caught up in a power struggle that resulted in the split of Viacom into two independent, separately stock traded companies. These were CBS Corporation and the 'new' Viacom, under which all non-television activities were sub-ordinated, including Paramount Pictures which lost its television division in the process.

Following the re-merger of Viacom and CBS, All Access has begun to incorporate dozens of shows from Viacom brands including Paramount Network, MTV, VH1, BET, Comedy Central, Smithsonian, and Nickelodeon. There is no currently no confirmation on when Star Trek: Prodigy, which is due for release on Nickelodeon, will be added

At present, there have been no announcements as to whether all thirteen movies will be made available on the streaming service, which currently hosts only a selection of them. Like the re-merger before it, this re-branding has left fans hopeful they’ll be able to stream all of Star Trek on one service, soon.
