23. Ravager Thanos
Episode two of What If…? offered brand new Variants of many different characters. There was T’Challa as Star-Lord, fanboy Korath, bartender Drax, and glamourous Nebula to name but a few. The most surprising however, without question, was Thanos.
In the main MCU continuity, it took the collective effort of just about every hero in the universe to stop the Mad Titan. Even then, this came after half the population of the universe had been dead for five years, and it took the ultimate sacrifices of two of Earth’s best defenders.
In the reality where T’Challa was Star-Lord however, Thanos was convinced to give up his genocidal infinity quest after just one conversation. Star-Lord had armed the Ankaran resistance, saved Drax's planet from a Kree invasion, and stole the Orb to save the Krylorians from extinction, but nothing compares to saving the entire universe with mere words in the ear of Thanos.
Not only did he leave behind his destiny, so impressed was he by T’Challa’s argument that he actually joined the Ravagers. Before What If…? dropped on Disney+, could anyone have ever imagined Thanos willingly accepting another as his commander?
