Why Disney (Probably) Won't Save Netflix's Marvel TV Shows

1. The Tone Doesn't Fit

On top of Disney looking for a much bigger scale and level of IP from their Marvel streaming series than what's offered by The Defenders, there's also an issue with the Mouse House's family-friendly focus.

Jessica Jones is a survivor of assault and an alcoholic. Daredevil is a man consumed by darkness. The Punisher has PTSD and kills people with no remorse. These are shows that tackle extremely heavy and serious themes - which admittedly you still can do, to an extent, in things that aren't R-rated - and do so in a very adult manner.

On the streaming service, Disney will want to appeal to the biggest market possible, both for viewership and merchandise, much like the MCU movies do. They can't and won't incorporate the levels of gore, violence, and sex that these series have, and at the same time to tone down these shows would be to rob them off what makes them so great, meaning you'd be delivering a lesser product of something people have already started switching off, which is just a lose-lose situation that Disney aren't going to want to find themselves in. Netflix's cancelled Marvel shows may find a home somewhere - especially, HOPEFULLY, Daredevil - but it's unlikely to be Disney+.
