Why Disney (Probably) Won't Save Netflix's Marvel TV Shows
2. Disney Have Bigger Series On Offer
Disney's streaming service, Disney+, will launch next year with some BIG offerings: not only is it going to have Disney's complete back catalogue of movies on there - movies that have, not coincidentally, started disappearing from Netflix - but a number of original new series too.
Jon Favreau's live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, is leading the way, but there'll also be a Rouge One spin-off, a High School Musical series, a High Fidelity show, The Clone Wars Season 7, and a Monsters Inc series too.
Chief among all of those are a number of Marvel Cinematic Universe shows, with limited series set to focus on Loki, Scarlet Witch & Vision, and Falcon & Bucky. That's indicative of where Disney want to go with their MCU series: big, recognisable names, with characters who've appeared in the movies. Even the likes of Nick Fury and Rocket & Groot have been rumoured as well.
Considering that, the Netflix shows don't really fit their vision. Cancelled series are hardly going to be more popular than major MCU movie characters, and while Daredevil is a much bigger IP than Iron Fist and Luke Cage, the show still doesn't come close to the level of hype and popularity as the big screen heroes. Disney are looking to make Marvel shows with budgets of $100 million plus, which doesn't fit with these more street-level comic book figures, and they're also looking to make a real splash and compete with Netflix, which wouldn't include picking up their cast-offs.
