Young Justice: Outsiders - 5 Ups & 1 Down From The Midseason Finale
Down...
1. In The Background
While Superboy appeared on-screen quite regularly throughout the four episodes, he didn't really have much to do. He offered advice to the new metahumans, stood by M'Gann as she entered Gar's mind and even helped the team crush the circle of metahuman traffickers in Greater Bialya while rescuing Tara. However, much like he has for most of this season, he seemed to fade into the background in his own show - a show that once practically revolved around him.
The one silver lining here is that his reduced role does seem to be intentional. The writers even had him and M'Gann discuss how their relationship was getting lost in the midst of this recent metahuman madness and, as a result, they haven't been able to spend as much time together. Given that this relationship was a huge part of Conner Kent's story, it makes sense that extended periods of time away from his other half would leave him (and us) feeling a little underwhelmed.
This is by no means a major issue (yet) and has only become noticeable because the Outsiders are staying at Conner and M'Gann's house. Hopefully it will change moving forward because, at the moment, Superboy feels like he's been rather underutilized as a character. Yes, he's been on our screens quite often but that hasn't made up for the fact that he seems to be lacking a purpose this season and, quite frankly, he deserves a much greater role.
