Bayley's one-sided loss to Alexa Bliss at the 2017 Extreme Rules pay-per-view was an important stage in the character's development. After years at the top of NXT, Bayley experienced unprecedented success in her first few months on the main roster, winning the RAW Women's Championship and defending it in her hometown (well, close enough) at WrestleMania 33. Who else managed so much, so quickly?

Bayley's uber-fan character was in desperate need of being brought back to Earth, and that bump came thanks to Alexa Bliss. The Wicked Witch of WWE had her way with Bayley on a number of occasions, easily defeating her for the title and seemingly having no trouble defending it. There was that godawful 'This Is Your Life' segment, a regrettable piece of creative that did more damage than any loss could.

Bayley wasn't buried, but she was pushed back a step. It seemed more dramatic because of how much ground she had covered in those first few months on the big stage. She could do no wrong, so her first missteps were going to be met with cries of foul play. It took her a while to find her footing once again, but 2020 Bayley is proof that 2017 Bayley learnt some valuable lessons.
