In a way, the announcement of the all-female Royal Rumble earlier this year was always going to disappoint the fans in some respect, if only because it was by Stephanie McMahon, one of the most polarising figures in wrestling.

But, had it not been for internet spoilers, it might have at least been a surprise. As it was, pretty much everyone knew that they were about to drop this bombshell, thanks to a host of online reports claiming that Vince was about to give it the green-light.

This didn't necessarily detract from the announcement's wider significance. After years of not taking its women's division seriously, WWE making another giant stride towards gender parity was always going to be a winner.

However, in the future, we are now doomed to associate this memory with a crescendo of online whispers instead of a big, bombastic moment inside the squared circle. And that's a little bit annoying.
