Even if the ECW and WWE Titles weren't taking off him owing to his and Sabu's infamous drug bust, it was always the plan for Van Dam to have a transitional run on top. It was WWE's way of saying 'thank you' for his years of service, while also getting the ECW relaunch off to a strong, positive start.

Just two weeks after besting Big Match John at the Hammerstein Ballroom, Van Dam did battle with the man whose Spear helped him win the title in the first place, Edge, at Vengeance. The red-hot Rated-R Superstar was on top form in 2006 and gave Robbie V a great match here.

What made this match so great was that both men varied up their offense and worked in some truly unique counters. For example, Edge dodged RVD's spinning heel kick off the apron to the barricade and then levelled him with a sick powerbomb on the barrier, something you never see out of him.

You also don't often see a top-tier talent taking a sunset flip powerbomb from the apron to the floor, but RVD did here. He was eventually able to rally with his impressive array of kicks and flips and spins, before an errant spin kick dropped the referee.

The distraction allowed Edge to hit a top rope DDT, spiking Van Dam's head into the mat, but it wasn't quite enough to stop the newly-crowned champ. After avoiding a Spear (taking Lita out of the equation in the process), Van Dam was able to hit the Five Star and retain the title.

A little over a week later, the drug bust would go down and RVD would have to drop the belt. Guess who he dropped it to...
