4. Forever!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL_mm7_D1wM Terry Funk has had more retirement matches than most wrestlers have had matches. Like Jason Voorhees, you can put him down, but within a year he's back on his feet and swinging improvised weapons at others. His first retirement came about in 1983, when Terry was a spry 38 year-old main-eventing in All Japan Pro Wrestling alongside his brother. They faced the gaijin dream team of Terry Gordy and Stan Hansen and lost. After the match, a hysterical Funk shouted that his retirement would last forever, repeating this last word over and over with increasing urgency for several minutes. Methinks the Terry doth protest too much. It's best recognized today as a snippet of the Botchamania opening, but according to the Funker himself, the emotion was real. At the time, Terry really had no intention of wrestling again, at least in Japan, where he enjoyed almost universal adoration from the fans. When AJPW promoter Giant Baba asked him to come back only a year later, Funk agreed despite knowing he'd never be the same in the fans eyes after breaking his word. The lure of another huge payday -- and sheer love of the sport -- brought him back, and will continue to do so until he's a Futurama-style head in a jar. Funkism: "Forever! FOREVER! FOR! EVERRRRRRR!"
