10 Amazing WWE SummerSlam Plans You Won't Believe Almost Happened

4. Team Nexus To Defeat Team WWE - SummerSlam 2010

In 2010 the WWE product became interesting again with the emergence of The Nexus. Led by Wade Barrett, The Nexus emulated the tried and tested 'outsider' gimmick of the NWO and the WCW/ECW Invasion. As The Nexus grew in popularity, the WWE developed a SummerSlam pay per view in which Team Nexus would wrestle in an elimination tag match against Team WWE. The original plan was to continue to develop The Nexus by having The Nexus win the match cleanly and with it reaffirm The Nexus' heat and momentum for the medium to long term. However according to Edge and Chris Jericho, who both participated in the match as members of Team WWE, John Cena lobbied to have the match end with Team WWE prevailing over The Nexus. According to Jericho and Edge, Cena wanted to be the last member of Team WWE against the remaining members of Team Nexus Wade Barrett and Justin Gabriel. He then wanted to receive a DDT at ringside before somehow resurging in the ring to eliminate Gabriel and Barrett. (This is exactly how the match ended.) Both Jericho and Edge disagreed with Cena and thought that The Nexus should have won, particularly as they had so much heat and were clearly over with the fans. Cena apparently regretted changing the match as soon as he walked back through the curtain following the match but despite his regret all the heat that had surrounded The Nexus prior to SummerSlam had truly dissipated following SummerSlam. Imagine if the original plans for Team Nexus to walk out of SummerSlam as victors went ahead unchanged. Perhaps the faction would have reached the heights of modern day NWO? Unfortunately following Cena's intervention, The Nexus fizzled away with little fuss, its members relegated to mid-card jobbers and its leader forced to endure multiple gimmick changes and fruitless WWE pushes.
