From a riot that almost happened to one that most definitely did. In 1983, it was a six-man tag team match held by Canada's Stampede Wrestling, involving local favourites Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith, that prompted a group of hardcore fans to start fighting amongst themselves.

According to reports, this incident led to a female spectator being legitimately hurt, as she ended up being trampled underfoot while organisers tried to bring some order to a wild crowd in the Ogden Auditorium in Calgary.

The fall-out had wide-ranging consequences for Stampede Wrestling, beginning with long-serving announcer Ed Whalen, disgusted with what he had just witnessed, resigning live on air after expressing fears that the promotion was attracting the wrong type of fan.

The company was also hit by sanctions from local authorities, prohibiting them from holding any shows in the area for six months. This, as it turned out, would be one of the final nails in its coffin, with Vince McMahon swooping in with a takeover bid about a year later, after which he stripped its talent and sold it back to the Harts.

Stampede by name, stampede by nature.
