10 Annoying Ways WWE Ruined What We Once Loved
4. Battle Royals – No Real In-Ring Stories
Wrestling is a sport/entertainment product where the whole idea is two people trying to out-manoeuvre each other in order to land a decisive blow and pin the opponent’s shoulder to the mat for a three count. The Battle Royal spiced things up, creating new possibilities for the kind of stories that could be told inside the squared circle.
Unfortunately, WWE has either forgotten or simply don’t care about that anymore. Where Battle Royals used to be this cauldron of chaos with an overloaded ring full of wrestlers and numerous narratives running side by side and interweaving, now we just get a by-the-numbers match with a steady rate of eliminations before the inevitable final few remain.
Sure there have been exceptions in recent years such as the 2020 Royal Rumble which were rich with story and narrative, but for the most part the average battle royal you get to see on WWE television these days is bland and uninteresting; with the only attempt at storytelling being the “oh how are they gonna get the big guy over the top rope” trope. For a match with so much history and significance that is a total shame.
