10 Most Anticipated Wrestling Matches Of All-Time (That Actually Happened)

2. Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar

Perhaps no other match had the amount of hype and expectations that this match did, only to fall flat on it's face. From 1997 to 2000, Bill Goldberg's Dominance was unmatched in pro wrestling, and the same could be said for Brock Lesnar between 2002 and 2004. Naturally, fans and wrestlers alike all wondered what would happen when the two 300-pound behemoths finally clashed. The result was not pretty. After a build that began at the 2004 Royal Rumble, which saw Lesnar cause Goldberg to be eliminated from the match, anticipation was high for the potentially fantastic battle. That anticipation continued to grow after Goldberg cost Lesnar his WWE title during a defense against Eddie Guerrero a month later. In the weeks leading up to the match, thing began to unravel, as Goldberg made it clear that he didn't want to extend his WWE contract, which expired after WrestleMania. Shortly after, Brock Lesnar expressed his desire to leave the company, as he wanted to make a run at a pro football career. Both stars were set to abandon wrestling immediately after the match. To help save face, the WWE added Stone Cold Steve Austin as a special guest referee. The motivation from both stars was clearly lacking, and resulted in one of the most disappointing matches in wrestling history. Goldberg would emerge victorious, as the WWE reportedly felt he was more likely to return to the company than Lesnar, which ended up not being the case. However, both were on the receiving end of Stone Cold Stunners by the end of the night.
