10 Awesome Gimmicks Wasted On Terrible Wrestlers

9. Papa Shango

Papa Shango was a freaking voodoo doctor who lit opponents on fire and caused the top babyfaces in WWE to ooze black blood. How cool is that?

From the awesome makeup job to the special effects that accompanied the character, Shango was an attempt to capitalize on the success of The Undertaker, a dark and supernatural being who had connected with fans.

While the look and presence of the character was strong, the actual in-ring presentation was not. Charles Wright, who would go onto great success as 2016 Hall of Fame inductee The Godfather, was a green powerhouse whose performances between the ropes failed to live up to the hype. A series of comically bad battles with The Ultimate Warrior did not help matters.

Just over a year after the dangerous doctor of the dark arts arrived, he was gone and Wright was onto a considerably less-awesome gimmick: The Supreme Fighting Machine, Kama.

Erik Beaston is a freelance pro wrestling writer who likes long walks in the park, dandelions and has not quite figured out that this introduction is not for Match.com. He resides in Parts Unknown, where he hosts weekly cookouts with Kane, The Ultimate Warrior, Papa Shango and The Boogeyman. Be jealous.
