10 Awesome War Games Matches You Must Revisit
2. Team Sting Vs. The Four Horsemen (WCW WrestleWar '91)
One of two WarGames matches to be awarded the full five stars by Dave Meltzer, Team Sting vs. The Four Horsemen at WrestleWar '91 is a stone cold classic, and it's highlighted by the best individual performance of Brian Pillman's career.
Pillman entered the match a wounded soldier, having been destroyed by the Horsemen earlier in the week. He fought his opponents with a big bandage around his arm and shoulder, but the injury only amplified his determination, and he fought like an absolute madman throughout. It remains as perfect an underdog performance as you'll find anywhere in history, but Pillman's survivalist story wasn't enough to spur him and his side to victory.
His shoulder was a constant target throughout, and it finally gave out on him in the end. Singled out by the Horsemen, Phillman found himself at the mercy of the monstrous Sid Vicious, who powerbombed him several times, with Brian's head hitting the cage roof on the final repetition. He refused to submit, but Pillman was in pieces, prompting El Gigante to hit the ring and surrender on his behalf.
A gruelling war of attrition, WrestleWar '91 is an absolute 'must watch,' but doesn't quite represent the stipulation's pinnacle...
