The post-WrestleMania XXX glow didn't take long to fade, and by July, the hopelessly naive notion that Cesaro and Daniel Bryan would launch WWE into a bold new era had evaporated.

Bryan was injured - Vince had already told him the week of New Orleans that Roman was his man for the next 10 years - while at Battleground, Cesaro made up the numbers in a battle royal held for the Intercontinental title won by the Miz, who by 2014 was as much a fiery youngster as Carlos Colon in 1993.

Oh, and John Cena won the World title in the main event to symbolise that nothing had changed.

Everything else at Battleground was either falsely advertised or just really uninspired with the exception of a white-hot opener between the Usos and Luke Harper & Erick Rowan. That Two out of Three Falls match was absolutely incredible.

Harper was on awesome form in particular. Selling the cerebral monster that WWE inexplicably refused to buy into, in one clever, wince-inducing spot, he used Jimmy Uso's momentum against him to throw him neck-first into the bottom rope. The heat sequence was vile - Rowan was trying to decapitate those poor sods with his back elbows - and the heels moved with such dynamic propulsion that it didn't seem to matter how hard the Usos fought. Their strengths were amplified in their opponents. The Usos could dive, but Harper could throw himself through the ropes like he'd cut the brakes on his truck downhill.

When they made the comeback, wow.

The series of near-falls in the third was just scintillating; the excess was thoroughly earned because look at the size of those heels. The Usos had to throw everything they had at them.
