Eddie Guerrero has never been a bad wrestler, per se, but during his early years he didn’t quite receive the kind of success you might have expected for a performer of his ability.

After jumping ship to WWE in early 2000, much of his time was spent teaming The Radicalz or alongside Chyna, typically competing for European and Intercontinental honours. Far away from the main event, basically.

But in mid-2001, Guerrero was sent to rehab to treat his addiction to pain-killers and alcohol, and he would eventually part ways with company toward the end of the year after being arrested and receiving a DUI. .

A five-month stint on the indies and in Japan would ensue, as Guerrero managed to get himself together to the point that the WWE brought him back into the fold in May 2002. They were very much tracking his movements in the minor leagues.

This time, there was to be no more dwelling in the lower echelons of the card. As part of the SmackDown roster, Guerrero became a member of the so-called SmackDown Six, putting on something incredible displays as the B-show started to outshine Raw. And once he started dialling up the “Lie, Cheat and Steal” gimmick, his popularity absolutely sky-rocketed, taking him to the top of the card at WrestleMania XX where he’d enter Madison Square Garden as WWE Champion (and leave it the very same way).

Though no less than he deserved, it was quite the comeback for Guerrero after the woes of his first stint with the company.
