10 Awesome WWE Wrestling Match Sequels No One Ever Talks About
2. Stone Cold Steve Austin & The Rock’s Own WrestleMania Backlash (1999)
When you think of Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock you think of their legendary WrestleMania trilogy of matches when these two larger than life Superstars clashed in three epic encounters on The Grandest Stage of Them All. It’s easy to forget the matches The Rattlesnake and The People’s Champion had in between, like the sequel to their first WrestleMania encounter at Backlash 1999.
Austin defended the WWF title this time around in a No Holds Barred contest, with the added drama of the shady Shane McMahon being the special guest referee. Rock and Austin thoroughly entertained in this match, tearing into one another on the concrete floor and through the crowd in a wild contest. They spent more time outside the ring than they did inside it.
The ending was peak Attitude Era entertainment too. Prior to the match everything was in favour of Rock going over with the help of The Corporation, but in the bout Vince McMahon came to ringside and laid out Shane with a title shot and Austin hit Rock with the belt and a stunner (who sold it as amazing as he always did) for the win.
